Jessica Dickerson
Assistant Professor in Residence, Director of Athletic Bands
M.M., University of Connecticut
B.A., University of Connecticut
A two-time UConn alumna and longtime member of the University’s band faculty, Jessica Dickerson was appointed Director of Athletic Bands in 2026 after more than a decade of leadership, teaching, and service within the Department of Music. She previously served as Assistant Professor in Residence, Associate Director of Athletic Bands, and Associate Head of Undergraduate Advising.
Since joining the UConn teaching community in 2014 as Graduate Assistant Director of Bands and Wind Ensembles, Dickerson has played a central role in the continued growth and national visibility of UConn Athletic Bands. She has directed the UConn Marching Band and Varsity Pep Bands through an extraordinary period in the University’s history, supporting multiple NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball National Championship seasons, conference championships, postseason bowl games, nationally televised events, university ceremonies, and countless performances that have become part of the fabric of the UConn experience. Most recently, she has led preparations for the band’s appearance in the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, one of the most significant honors in the program’s history.
In addition to her work with Athletic Bands, Dickerson has led the University Symphonic Band and Concert Band, teaches undergraduate coursework in leadership and arts administration, mentors undergraduate and graduate students, and provides leadership for undergraduate advising within the Department of Music. Her teaching emphasizes artistic excellence, thoughtful preparation, reflective practice, and the development of collaborative leaders who understand the impact of their contributions both within and beyond the ensemble.
Dickerson earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Music and Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Connecticut. Before returning to UConn as a graduate assistant, she taught special education in North Carolina through Teach for America, an experience that continues to inform her student-centered approach to teaching and mentorship.
She lives in Ellington, Connecticut, with her husband, Josh, and their three children, Jacob (6y), Jenna (4y), and Jaden (2y).
