BM – Jazz

Overview

Designed for aspiring jazz musicians, UConn’s Bachelor of Music in Jazz provides real-world experiences and foundational training, equipping students with the skills and versatility needed to pursue careers as performers, composers, arrangers, and conductors.

We emphasize the development of style, musicianship, improvisational fluidity, and acquiring the technical skills to write and arrange music in both private lessons and course work. We aim to foster personal creativity informed by the rich history of the music and an understanding of its societal context and significance.

Outstanding performance opportunities abound with our award-winning, highly acclaimed jazz ensembles both on and off campus. Additionally, students perform a junior half-recital and a senior full recital; give solo performances in convocation; and perform in master classes with a host of guest artists.

Current innovations in modern jazz performance and composition are at the heart of the program’s approach, though we still honor jazz’s rich traditions. We place a strong emphasis on collaboration and individual creativity while providing students with the information, skills, and support to forge successful musical careers.
