Travis Higgins III

DMA Candidate, Trumpet

Travis James Higgins III is the first born of three to mother Rosezella Higgins and father Travis James Higgins Jr, Born and raised in Houston Texas on June 3, 1992. Travis began his pursuit of music at a very young age by learning drums and percussion at the age of four years old. With his grandmother, a saxophonist, pianist and music teacher, along with his father, a trumpet and bass player, young Travis was engulfed in musical teachings and guidance. Upon coming to the six grade, Travis decided to move from drums to trumpet out of fascination and influence from his father and thus the musical journey for the mastery of trumpet began. While pursuing trumpet at school, he continued to play drums by way of his father bringing his son along to freelance at various churches throughout the greater Houston area, even fulfilling paid drum positions by the age of 10. However, Travis continued to only pursued trumpet scholastically, from middle school all throughout high school, without a single professional instructor for trumpet.

Upon picking up piano by influence of his grandmother, Travis studied his undergrad at Prairie View A&M University, a historical black college and university just north of Houston where both his father and his grandmother attended. It was there where Travis encountered his first trumpet instructor, Dr. Timmey Zachery. Under his guidance, Travis was able to develop his versatility and fundamentals, performing in multiple groups such as the Prairie view A&M wind ensemble, jazz band, trumpet ensemble, and orchestra, simultaneously.

Since then, Travis has graduated from PVAMU with a degree in Music Performance, freelanced around the greater Houston area, marched with two Drum Corp International groups, the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2012, and the soloist and duettist with the Bluecoats in 2014. His resume has a multitude of performances including; pop singer Solange Knowles, Young Artist Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Terra Haute Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, and Nashville contemporary music ensemble. He is also an active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity Inc., Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and now  a graduate of the prestigious Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music under retired Professor Edmund Cord with a Masters of Music and Performers Diploma. Currently, Travis is pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University Of Connecticut and is an active freelancer around  the Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville, Houston and New York Area. With the grace and guidance of God, Travis aspires to become a world leading recording artist on Trumpet, and to impact people  through his music.
