Bachelor of Arts in Music – No Emphasis

  1. Completion of the following courses: MUSI 1101, 1103, 1222, 1311, 1312, 1313, 1314, 3311, 3313, 3401, and 3405. MUSI 1103 is required of all music students during the first fall semester of residence during which it substitutes for MUSI 1101, Convocation.
  2. Convocation (MUSI 1101), Private Lesson (MUSI 1222 or 3222), and Ensemble (MUSI 1110, 1111, 1112) are required for six semesters of a student’s residency in music as a declared music major, which need not to be consecutive.
    a. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts with voice as their primary instrument may substitute MUSI
    1119 for MUSI 1111 in the last two semesters of their residency.
    b. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts with keyboard as their primary instrument need four
    semesters of ensemble.
  3. Four performances in convocation or elective recital.
  4. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts with no emphasis must complete piano proficiency equivalent to MUSI 1231 Class Piano Level 2.
    a. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts with keyboard as their primary instrument are not required
    to take MUSI 1231.
  5. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts with keyboard as their primary instrument must complete four semesters of MUSI 1241.
  6. The University’s information literacy requirement will be met through participation in MUSI 1103 and MUSI 3322W, 3410W, or 3421W.
  7. The University’s writing in the major requirement will be met through participation in MUSI 3322W, 3410W, 3421W, or any 3000-level or above W course that has been approved for this major.

Bachelor of Arts in Music – Jazz Studies

  1. Completion of the following courses: MUSI 1101, 1103, 1222, 1311, 1312, 1313, 1314, 3311, 3312, 3313, 3314, 3401, 3405, and 3409. MUSI 1103 is required of all music students during the first fall semester of residence during which it substitutes for MUSI 1101, Convocation.
  2. Completion of MUSI 1601, 3601, 3631, and 3632.
  3. Convocation (MUSI 1101), Private Lesson (MUSI 1222 or 3222), and Ensemble (MUSI 1110, 1111, 1112) are required for six semesters of a student’s residency in music as a declared music major, which need not to be consecutive.
    a. For the last four semesters, Jazz Ensemble (MUSI 1115) fills the remaining four credits (1 credit
    per semester) of the large ensemble requirement.
    b. Two semesters of applied study in jazz are counted against the 8 required semesters of applied
    study (MUSI 1222).
  4. Four performances in convocation or elective recital.
  5. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts must complete piano proficiency equivalent to MUSI 1231 Class Piano Level 4.
    a. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts with keyboard as their primary instrument are not required
    to take MUSI 1231.
  6. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts with keyboard as their primary instrument must complete four semesters of MUSI 1241.
  7. The University’s information literacy requirement will be met through participation in MUSI 1103 and MUSI 3322W, 3410W, or 3421W.
  8. The University’s writing in the major requirement will be met through participation in MUSI 3322W, 3410W, 3421W, or any 3000-level or above W course that has been approved for this major.

Bachelor of Arts in Music – Music History

  1. Completion of the following courses: MUSI 1101, 1103, 1222, 1311, 1312, 1313, 1314, 3311, 3312, 3313, 3314, 3401, 3405, 3409. MUSI 1103 is required of all music students during the first fall semester of residence during which it substitutes for MUSI 1101, Convocation.
  2. Music History Courses: MUSI 4489, and three courses chosen from MUSI 3410/w, 4471, and 4473; one of these three courses must be 4471 or 4473, and one must be on a pre-1700 topic.
  3. Music Theory Courses: Two courses from MUSI 3321, 3322W, 3361, 3371Q.
  4. Foreign Language: Two options
    a. Two semesters of German, if another language is taken to fulfill the group requirement (students
    will take 1000-level courses in German for 4 credits.
    b. If German is taken as a group requirement, an additional two semesters will be required (students
    will take 2000-level or above courses in German for 3 credits.

MUSI 1103 is required of all music students during the first fall semester of residence during which it substitutes for MUSI 1101, Convocation.
  2. Completion of MUSI 3321 and 3322W.
  3. Completion of MUSI 1601, 3371Q, 4731, and 4979.
  4. Completion of the following composition courses: MUSI 3331, 4333 (two semesters), 3351, 3631.
  5. Convocation (MUSI 1101), Private Lesson (MUSI 1222 or 3222), and Ensemble (MUSI 1110, 1111, 1112) are required for seven semesters of a student’s residency in music as a declared music major.
    a. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music with voice as their primary instrument may substitute
    MUSI 1119 for MUSI 1111 in the last two semesters of their residency.
  6. Four performances in convocation or recital, exclusive of any degree recitals. Students with a composition emphasis may appear as a soloist, chamber musician, or accompanist.
  7. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music must complete piano proficiency equivalent to MUSI 1231 Class Piano Level 4.
    a. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music with keyboard as their primary instrument are not required
    to take MUSI 1231.
  8. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music with keyboard as their primary instrument must complete four semesters of MUSI 1241.
  9. The University’s information literacy requirement will be met through participation in MUSI 1103 and MUSI 3322W, 3410W, or 3421W.

Bachelor of Music – Theory

MUSI 1103 is required of all music students during the first fall semester of residence during which it substitutes for MUSI 1101, Convocation.
  2. Completion of MUSI 3321 and 3322W.
  3. Completion of MUSI 3331, 3351, 3361, 3371Q, 4731, and 4999 (Independent Study).
  4. Completion of two courses chosen from the following: MUSI 1601, 3601, 3631, or 3421W.
  5. Convocation (MUSI 1101), Private Lesson (MUSI 1222 or 3222), and Ensemble (MUSI 1110, 1111, 1112) are required for seven semesters of a student’s residency in music as a declared music major.
    a. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music with voice as their primary instrument may substitute
    MUSI 1119 for MUSI 1111 in the last two semesters of their residency.

  11. Students with a theory emphasis must take a total of 79-82 credits in Music and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.33 in theory courses.

Bachelor of Music – Instrumental Performance

  1. Completion of the following courses: MUSI 1101, 1103, 1222, 1311, 1312, 1313, 1314, 3311, 3312, 3313, 3314, 3401, 3405, 3409, and one additional 3000-level music history course. MUSI 1103 is required of all music students during the first fall semester of residence during which it substitutes for MUSI 1101, Convocation.
  2. Completion of MUSI 3321 and 3322W.
  3. Completion of MUSI 3232, 4731, 4732 or 4733, and 4979.
  4. Completion of two of the following courses: MUSI 3331, 3351, 3361, or 3371Q.
  5. Convocation (MUSI 1101), Private Lesson (MUSI 1222 and 3222; MUSI 3222 must be taken for four semesters), and Ensemble (MUSI 1110, 1111, 1112) are required for all semesters of a student’s residency in music as a declared music major.
  6. Four semesters of MUSI 1113 (Chamber Music/Small Ensemble).
  7. A half recital during the junior year as a prerequisite for MUSI 4979. Promotion to MUSI 3222 is a prerequisite for the half recital.
  8. Four performances in convocation or recital, exclusive of any degree recitals. Students with a performance emphasis must appear as a soloist a minimum of three times.
  9. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music must complete piano proficiency equivalent to MUSI 1231 Class Piano Level 4.
    a. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music with keyboard as their primary instrument are not required
    to take MUSI 1231.
  10. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music with keyboard as their primary instrument must complete four semesters of MUSI 1241.
  11. The University’s information literacy requirement will be met through participation in MUSI 1103 and MUSI 3322W, 3410W, or 3421W.
  12. The University’s writing in the major requirement will be met through participation in MUSI 3322W, 3410W, 3421W, or any 3000-level or above W course that has been approved for this major.
  13. Students with an emphasis in Instrumental Performance must take a total of 81 credits in Music.

Bachelor of Music – Vocal Performance

  1. Completion of the following courses: MUSI 1101, 1103, 1222, 1311, 1312, 1313, 1314, 3311, 3312, 3313, 3314, 3401, 3405, 3409, and one additional 3000-level music history course. MUSI 1103 is required of all music students during the first fall semester of residence during which it substitutes for MUSI 1101, Convocation.
  2. Completion of MUSI 3321 and 3322W.
  3. Completion of MUSI 1119 (four semesters), 1251, 1252, 2253, 2254, 3231, 4731, 4732, and 4979.
  4. Completion of two of the following courses: MUSI 3721, 3722, 3723, or 3724.
  5. Convocation (MUSI 1101), Private Lesson (MUSI 1222 and 3222; MUSI 3222 must be taken for four semesters), and Ensemble (MUSI 1110, 1111, 1112) are required for all semesters of a student’s residency in music as a declared music major.
  6. Completion of piano courses necessary to acquire proficiency in playing piano accompaniments as determined by jury.
  7. A half recital during the junior year as a prerequisite for MUSI 4979. Promotion to MUSI 3222 is a prerequisite for the half recital.
  8. Four performances in convocation or recital, exclusive of any degree recitals. Students with a performance emphasis must appear as a soloist a minimum of three times.
  9. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music must complete piano proficiency equivalent to MUSI 1231 Class Piano Level 4.
  10. The University’s information literacy requirement will be met through participation in MUSI 1103 and MUSI 3322W, 3410W, or 3421W.
  11. The University’s writing in the major requirement will be met through participation in MUSI 3322W, 3410W, 3421W, or any 3000-level or above W course that has been approved for this major.
  12. Students with an emphasis in Instrumental Performance must take a total of 88 credits in Music.

Music Education

  1. Completion of MUSI 1101, 1103, 1222, 1311, 1312, 1314, 1501 (five courses), 1701, 3222 (three semesters), 3311, 3312, 3313, 3314, 3342, 3401, 3405, 3409, 3421W, 3851, 4731, 4732 or 4733.
  2. Completion of Class Piano, MUSI 1231 (four semesters).
  3. Convocation (MUSI 1101), Applied Music (MUSI 1222 and 3222), and Ensemble (MUSI 1110, 1111, 1112) is required for all semesters a student is in residency as a music major (with exception to the semester spent student teaching).
  4. Four performances in convocation or elective recital.
  5. Students pursuing Music Education must complete a minimum or 36 credits of 2000-level or above courses in Music.
    a. Up to 8 credits of 1000 level courses may be included with prior consent of the faculty advisor.
  6. Completion of the following professional education requirements: EDCI 3020, 3100/W, 3305, 4010, 4210W (3 credits), 4250 (9 credits); EGEN 3100, 3110, 4100, 4110; EPSY 3010, 3100, 4010; HIST 1501 or 1502; PSYC 1100; and the Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction program.
